Note that there is also accommodation in most of the communities in the vicinity of Cairns that is relatively inexpensive. So you may wish to stay along the coast in another location, such as Palm Cove. However, please be aware that the transport between Cairns and such outlying communities is limited. Some options include using the shuttle bus operated by the Sun Palm Transport Group (http://www.sunpalmtransport.com/index.php) or renting a car. Please also consider the travel time. For instance, Palm Cove is 25 km (15 miles) north of Cairns, a 30 minute drive and Port Douglas is 70 km (45 miles) north of Cairns, a 60 minute drive.
